Organisations involved in registration
and elections in the UK
The electoral register and elections are
primarily managed by local electoral registration and returning
officers. In England and Wales, they are based in local councils.
In Scotland they may be separate offices. You can find their
websites and other contact details by entering your postcode on
this site.

The Electoral Office for Northern
Ireland
The Chief
Electoral Officer in Northern Ireland administers elections and
compiles the Register of Electors in Northern Ireland. He is
independent of Government and is assisted in his duties by the
staff of the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland.
The Ministry of Justice
The Ministry of Justice is the lead
government department for elections. They are responsible for
reforming electoral legislation to improve access, engagement, and
confidence in the system, and maintaining professional delivery of
elections and registration procedures. They also lead on electoral
modernisation, looking at ways of giving people choice in the way
they exercise their vote.

aristotle is the Guardian Unlimited's political database. Open
to all and free to use it is packed with information about MPs,
ministers, election candidates and parliamentary activity.
